In early April we had the honour of being invited by the Belgian National Orchestra for a concert at BOZAR.
Before the concert, we had the opportunity to meet the conductor, Richard Egarr. Egarr is known as a specialist in Baroque repertoire, but yesterday we were treated to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony.
What stayed with us most from our meet and greet with Mr. Egarr was his vision of how classical music should be consumed, felt, and engaged with. He told us, “Please don’t behave.” He wanted us to feel free to move, clap, and even scream if that was how the music made us feel. To him, that is how classical music was meant to be listened to.
We concluded the evening with brief interviews about our experience, followed by drinks with our members. We are grateful to the Orchestra and Mr. Eggar for this unique opportunity.
